Untamed New England Gear Bin Details

Personal & Team Gear Bins

This race does not allow support crews; instead, the race organization will stage gear for racers at specific locations along the course.

Summary

Teams will leave gear bins with race management for staging around the race course.
  • The race allows 1 x 50 pound (23 kilogram) bin per racer that will be staged at a few Transition Areas around the race course (looks like you'll see these twice on the 2018 race course)
  • The race allows 1 x 50 pound (23 kilogram) bin per team that will be staged before and after paddling sections (so we often refer to this as the "paddle bin")
  • Remember: you will learn more details about gear bin locations in relation to the course in the official course overview distributed as part of the final Captain Communication in mid July 2018

Guidelines for the gear we transport as follows:

  • Gear can be in a plastic bin or a duffel bag, but we suggest a plastic bin as it better protects your equipment

  • The race isn't responsible for damage during transit, so protect your fragile items in a hard container or case; these will be stacked into trucks and driven on back roads, so take precautions to secure any breakable items

  • A strict 50 pound (23 kilogram) limit applies for the personal gear bin (1 per racer)

  • Only one container (bin or duffel) per racer; but you can have smaller containers inside the larger one, so long as the item is completely enclosed and contents are not spilling out

  • The duffel or bin must be clearly labeled on top and all sides with your team number (Untamed New England will furnish you with this number).

  • If using a bin, make sure it has a lid; the lid must latch or seal with zip ties (provided by the racer -- you should place 10 extra zip ties inside the bin to reseal the bin). If using a duffel, make sure it zips closed and has handles or straps for easy carrying.

In addition to our one item (bin/duffel) per racer guideline, we are also allowing one additional item (bin/duffel) per team for paddling gear. The "team paddle bin" will generally only be available before/after paddling legs and is a logical place to store paddle shoes, dry tops, and other paddling specific gear you may have. You may store anything in here, but it makes sense to us that it would be for gear you want on paddling legs. The "paddle gear bin" has a weight allowance of 50 pounds (23 kilograms).

In case you missed it: The race isn't responsible for damage during transit, so protect your fragile items in a hard container or case; these will be stacked into trucks and driven on bumpy back roads, so take precautions to secure any breakable items

We will have manual scales at the race check-in to weigh your equipment before loading it into our trucks.

  • A "race plan" will be provided to teams in the final Captain Communication (available mid July). This plan will explain the order of race disciplines, estimated duration for legs, availability schedule for your gear bins, etc. This race plan will not have your official race maps nor spell out specific checkpoint locations (you will get that as part of pre-race activities on July 24), but it will assist you in packing your equipment before you arrive at the gear check-in. Our goal is to save you as much time so you can arrive prepared and ready to hand in gear bins at your earliest convenience.
Here's an outline of transition areas for the 2018 race and what amenities they may have:
  • The 3-Bunnies Leg 1 concludes at TA1 with zilch in terms of amenities (we're lucky to have a road)
  • Leg 2 has TA2 with portajohns and ends at TA3 with access to electricity, indoor restrooms, full private hot showers, it's a practical taj mahal for racers
  • Leg 3 has an orienteering relay base (Pancake Paradise) mid-way with access to electricity etc, but it ends at TA4 with nothing
  • Leg 4 ends at TA5 with some portajohns
  • Leg 5 ends at TA6 with some portajohns
  • Leg 6 ends at TA7 with portajohns and access to electricity
  • Leg 7 ends at TA8 with portajohns and access to electricity
  • And then you're at the end: time for a beer!
